Encounter the region's marine wildlife

Whale watching locations

Whales can often easily be seen from land at:

  • Fingal Headland, where the whales can come in very close to shore
  • Carbarita headland
  • Hastings Point.

Whale watching cruise – Aquatic Blue Charters

Family-run and owned, Aquatic Blue Charters runs the only whale watching vessel out of the Coolangatta region. Whale Watcher is a 50' catamaran with full walk around lower deck, large front deck with seating, huge undercover rear deck, upper deck with shade and seating with excellent 360-degree views, lounge and toilet facilities. It carries a maximum of 46 passengers, giving photographers lots of room to move about the boat for that perfect shot.

They guarantee that you will see whales. A short trip out to the Whale Highway and it's less than 30 minutes before you see your first whale. Cruises include morning tea and a great educational commentary where owners Tony and Carol share their passion for these magnificent mammals.

The Whale Watcher operates June to November, departing from the southern end of the Gold Coast, Queensland.

Snorkel with turtles in the Cook Island Aquatic Reserve

Located approximately 600m offshore from Fingal Head, the Cook Island Aquatic Reserve is home to a large permanent colony of green and loggerhead turtles, and the docile leopard sharks who visit during the summer months. The abundance of marine life also includes bull rays, spotted eagle rays, giant gropers, wobbiegongs and the occasional grey nurse shark, with rock caves and coral gardens adding to the area's underwater charms.

A company that runs snorkelling tours in this region is Tweed Ocean Adventures.
