Picturesque Murwillumbah

At the heart of the Tweed Valley and convenient to Crystal Creek

Just 15 minutes from the pristine beaches of the Tweed Coast, 30 minutes south of the Gold Coast and 40 minutes north of Byron Bay is the township of Murwillumbah. At the heart of the Tweed Valley, Murwillumbah is your gateway to the Byron Bay hinterland, Gold Coast hinterland, surf beaches and colourful markets.

Murwillumbah is a classic Australian country town built to service the expansive sugar cane industry which developed late in the 19th century. Its architecture is a great mix of Edwardian and excellent examples of Art Deco with buildings that are up to a century old. For lovers of art and design, the town boasts the award-winning Tweed River Art Gallery. Built in 2004, the gallery is sleek and modern, perched on a hilltop on the edge of town. National touring exhibitions often stop here. The town and surrounding villages count over a dozen more galleries and artist's studios.

Renowned for its cafes, restaurants and hotels, it is a great place to refuel and relax. Murwillumbah has over a dozen coffee shops and most of them serve very good coffee, which is somewhat unusual for a town of this size. The daytime cafe scene in Murwillumbah is vibrant with some excellent award-winning cafes, try Sugar Beat (shown above) or The New Leaf amongst many others.

Watched over by the awe inspiring majesty of Mount Warning, and surrounded by five World Heritage National Parks, the countryside around Murwillumbah is a blend of rolling green hills and gently flowing rivers, punctuated with pockets of sugar cane, banana plantations, hobby farms and small village communities.

Or if you're cooking for your own intimate dinners in the comfort of your own bungalow at the Retreat, you may want to purchase your fresh produce from the local traders. Murwillumbah also has its own regular local markets.
